Australia: Cairns, the Tanks

31 Jul

Before hitting the waters in this divers paradise, checking out the local art district in former WW2 fuel tanks.

Tank 3: closed, tank 4: under construction, tank 5: opening later, tank 2: nothing happening, tank 1: non -existant.

Great! So much for culture…

Off to the big blue!

Australia: Airlie Beach at night

29 Jul

Right on time to dip into this harbour-town’s public “lagoon”, before sunset.
Having a Aussie-cuisine al fresco dinner (lots of resemblance with American “cuisine”) later, while enjoying some dudes playing the guitar. Good fun!

Australia: Whitsunday Islands

28 Jul

Our initial day-trip was cancelled, so we picked another one. Lucky shot! Pam, our sweet hotel-host, was worried we had a crappy one, but no…we picked the best one: daytrip on the Derwent Hunter, great old sailing-ship with a long history. From fishing to smuggling to race-ship to passenger-ship. She did it all!
Excellent day sailing, snorkling, swimming, relaxing along the Whitsunday Islands of the Great Barrier Reef. Great crew, nice fellow passengers. Lots and lots of Dutchies…again: they are everywhere 🙂

Saw lots of another typical Aussie-animal the last few days. Dead ones unfortunately…no mile without a dead animal..

Australia: Kinka beach

27 Jul

Staying at one of the many caravanparks in Australia. First people we meet are the owners: speaking Dutch. Next I bump into a Dutch family we met at Fraser Island 2 days ago, they were looking for a spot for their campervan. Then an elderly couple passes by and stopped because they heard Dutch; they moved to Australia almost 50 years ago. Hahaha, Dutchies everywhere!

Australia: more Fraser Island

25 Jul

While racing a 75 km strip of Fraser beach we reached Fraser International Airport on that same beach. 1 of the 2 sand airports in the world in use for commercial flights.
The pilot had a good sales-talk & great white socks, so off we went!
Woohoo! Whale watching and Fraser island by birds-eye.
Softest landing ever!
