Bad news from Urumqi

7 May

What we feared before we booked our trip to Xinjiang (west China), happened after our trip. Everybody assured us Xinjiang was safe to travel to, so we went…knowing the political situation was unstable.

2 weeks after our amazing trip we got this news from Josh who lives in Urumqi:

I’m extremely sad to share the news with you that Xinjiang’s capital of Urumqi was rocked last night with the news that an attack happened at the Urumqi Train Station, not but a few miles from my home.

We received a call last night asking us to stay indoors and woke up this morning to a text message from the police confirming what we had feared: 3 dead and 79 injured (4 critically). No other details were released other than the fact that the attack involved both a knife and an explosion.

What’s weird is that this whole last weekend we’ve been feeling the ground shake with explosive force due to military exercises nearby. Now this.
