Kashgar sunday bazaar

30 Mar

Sunday is the most important bazaar day when from all over Xinjiang locals and merchants come to Kashgar to buy and sell livestock and shop.
Max bought 3 Uyghur knives which we cannot take on the plane. Adili, our guide will send them to us by post. Let’s see how that works out. Packages from Europe usually don’t make it to Beijing.

Kashgar: chuanr!

30 Mar

Anything on a stick is ok…Chinese call it chuanr(the chinese character 串 makes sense)
Dinner in Kashgar old town. Surprised looks when the only foreigners in town walk in. A warm welcome with sweet tea and a local dish (something slippery tofu-ish). Good food, recommended by our guide Addil. After dinner off to a more western minded place for beer and cheesecake 🙂

Kashgar, Mt. Muztagata & lake Karakuri

29 Mar

Well worth the 4 hours driving.
We are the only tourists around, when two busses full of chinese catch up with us. We leave them as prey for the few vendors around who were trying to get our attention.

Afghanistan on the other side of the mountain…the Chinese army in between.

Kashgar, on the road to mount Muztagata

29 Mar

At 9.00 official Beijing time (7.00 local time, they don’t care about the Beijing time here) we are heading off to snow mountain Muztagata. Last stop food shopping before traffic continues to Pakistan, Tadijistan and Kyrgyzstan. Border with Afghanistan is closed, pfffff… Amazing scenery along the road.

Far West China, trip to Xinjiang

29 Mar

Trip to Xinjiang, close to the borders of Afganistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Middle East of China!
Starting in Kashgar, where the old city is taken down step by step unfortunately. Still some parts left though. After 5 minutes in the old city we forgot already our intention not to “eat from the streets”. Nice bread, homemade ice cream, yummy!
